The iShares MSCI Taiwan ETF, trading under the symbol EWT, is one of the most well-known single-country ETFs that tracks the performance of the Taiwan stock market. Launched in 2000, this fund is based on the MSCI Taiwan 25/50 Index. Its objective is to provide investors with access to the largest and highest-quality publicly traded companies in Taiwan, without the need to purchase shares directly on the country's stock exchange.
A significant portion of this fund's assets is concentrated in technology and semiconductor companies, with its largest holding typically being TSMC, the world's largest chip manufacturer. Additionally, companies in the electronics, telecommunications, financial services, and industrial sectors are also included in this ETF's portfolio. Consequently, EWT's performance is heavily influenced by the growth of the artificial intelligence industry, global demand for chips, and Taiwan's export dynamics.
This fund has attracted the attention of international investors due to its high liquidity, management by BlackRock, and the opportunity for concentrated investment in the Taiwanese economy. However, its heavy concentration in the semiconductor industry makes its volatility higher than that of many more diversified ETFs, and factors such as geopolitical tensions between China and Taiwan or shifts in the semiconductor industry cycle can have a significant impact on its returns.
From a historical price perspective, EWT has experienced multiple periods of ups and downs since its inception in 2000. After suffering severe drops during the early 2000s tech bubble burst and the 2008 financial crisis, the fund followed an upward trend in the subsequent years. From 2023 onwards, coinciding with the boom in the artificial intelligence industry and the surging demand for chips, it experienced significant growth and reached new all-time highs in 2026; although, like other technology-focused funds, it has also experienced short-term fluctuations along the way.
